Celebrations for the Ganesh Chaturthi have already commenced. Lord Ganesha or otherwise called Vighanharta (One who removes all life’s obstacles), Vinayaka and Pillaiyar, is one of the most revered deities in the Hindu religion. His name and worship is considered auspicious before any ceremony. Although Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated all over India, however in western India, it is regarded as one of their main festivals. Ganesha is one of the most revered and everyone in the religion worship him. On this colourful day, Modaks are offered to the Lord as it is his favourite. Now the question arises, Why Modak Only? When Ganesh Chaturthi is around the corner, how can there be no mention for Modaks. During these 10 auspicious days, devotees offer their deity with his favourite Laddoo Modak. This year the festival is coming on August 31. On the day, it is a tradition to offer him 21 modaks as Bhog or offering. This is because the sweet is very dear to the Lord.

Why Ganesha Loves Modak? Story Behind it

According to the Hindu scriptures, Lord Shiva once went to Anusuya’s home in the forest. Goddess Paarvati and Lord Ganesha also accompanied him. When they visited her house, Anusuya placed a condition. She said, she would only serve the Lord once Ganesha’s hunger was satisfied. During the meals, she served him with a single piece of sweet food. Subsequently, the Lord gave a loud burp after the sweet. As a coincident would have it, Lord Shiva also burped not once but 21 times. And from that day on, Lord is offered 21 Modaks. Goddess Parvati also knew that both were satisfied, and she expressed a wish that devotees should offer 21 modaks to him.

And till date, Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with full fervor and 21 modaks of various flavours are offered to Lord Krishna. Mostly steamed, some modaks are fried too.
