Second Spell generated the famous Chetan Sharma’s Hat-Trick

After winning the toss the Kiwis decided to bat. Openers John Wright and Phil Horne started decently until Horne was dismissed. Martin Crowe joined John Wright and the two continued batting confidently. Indian bowlers Maninder Singh, Mohammad Azharuddin and Ravi Shastri provided India with breakthroughs to get New Zealand at 181/5. Until this stage the Kiwis were still in a comfortable situation expected to touch the 250-run mark in their innings. However, Chetan Sharma’s Hat-Trick became a game changer for India.

Three Clean-bolds completely turned the match in India’s favour

The day is forever etched in the memory of each Indian. Here is how the whole saga happened. First the pacer uprooted the bails of Ken Rutherford, who was batting at 26. After that he cleaned up Ian Smith with a nice delivery. He knocked the bails off Ewen Chatfield, thus becoming the first ever Indian to pick a hat-trick across formats and also complete a world cup hat-trick. Because of this achievement, New Zealand could only manage 221/9 after 50 overs. Both Indian openers Sunil Gavaskar and Kris Srikkanth performed extremely well. While the former slammed a 85-ball century, Kris Srikkanth, scored 75 runs off 58 balls to guide India to a famous 9-wicket win over New Zealand. Gavaskar was adjudged the man of the match for his outstanding century.
