Maintain your Thyroid Function through certain foods

Often we hear individuals associating Hypothyroidism with Iodine deficiency. Most of the individuals recommend a diet rich in salt to solve the condition. In spite of all the assertions and claims there is no such diet to address the condition of Hypothyroidism diets abound. Also there is no relationship with eating or elimination of certain foods shall improve the condition. It is essential to maintain Thyroid Function through a balanced iodine diet. However sticking to a balanced diet containing Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fats, Minerals does not need additional Iodine. Also too much of the mineral causes Hyperthyroidism in many individuals.

However some of the important guidelines for Thyroid medicine is to be taken empty stomach and secondly avoid too much fiber which impairs the absorption. Besides there are certain foods that suppress the absorption of iodine.

Avoid the following while taking your Thyroxine(Thyroid Hormone)

  • Walnuts
  • Iron and Calcium Supplements
  • Antacids containing Aluminum or Calcium
  • Cholesterol Lowering medicines
  • Cottonseed Meal
  • Ulcer medicines such as Sucralfate

Thyroid is responsible for 3 hormones Calcitonin, T4 (thyroxine, or tetraiodothyronine) and T3 (triiodothyronine) into the bloodstream. The hormones control the rate at which cells and organs turn nutrients into energy and the amount of oxygen cells use. Here are some important guidelines to maintain the Thyroid health.

  • Eat the above products hours before or after thyroid medicines
  • Avoid Biotin a week before measuring Thyroid Function. Biotin interferes with accurate measurement and thus one can’t measure it accurately.
