Director Mani Ratnam proved his prowess with the success of Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1. As movie grossed 230 Crores at the Box Office, the movie did exceptionally well in both Tamil and overseas. It had a great opening weekend in USA, UK, Australia and New Zealand.
” Besides running number 1 in US with a collection of $ $4, it is running strong in the UAE, Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanka. Considering the movie is running strong, the movie shall make 500-550 crore in its lifetime. “This sum is based on the collection in Tamil Nadu. While Ponniyin Selvan is a hit in these two areas, it may not be the same case in other states.”

How does PS-1 fair in competition with Rajnikanth’s 2.0 and Kabali?
Rajnikanth is one of the South’s most revered actors. He has given many hits including 2.0 and Kabali.
Mani Ratnam’s Magnum Opus seems to be nearing the record.
“Out of the Rs 230 crore that Ponniyin Selvan made, nearly Rs 110-120 crore came from the overseas market. Before Ponniyin Selvan, it was Rajinikanth’s 2.0 that performed like this. However, 2.0 earned more than Rs 700 crore and that’s also because the film did well in Telugu and Hindi. It is to be noted that Ponniyin Selvan’s lion’s share comes from the Tamil version. The Telugu and Hindi contribution for Ponniyin Selvan is low. So, it is safe to say that Ponniyin Selvan is a biggest hit in Tamil Nadu.”
