Upcoming Mani Ratnam movie has grandeur and opulence in every which way. Ponniyin Selvan-1 , the film maker’s epic venture showcases the Chola period. He has left no stone unturned to bring to life the image of Chola period. Taking care of the smallest of details, he has tried to even capture the minutest details of the dynasty. It is a surprise that the actors wore real Gold in the movie.
Movie is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s namesake novel and tells the story of the early days of Arulmozhivarman, who later became the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I. Mani Ratnam’s film making is in a league of his own and the director has a unique style of film making. Whether it is his choice of characters, or the enacting of scenes or even the selection of Jewlery, he makes a statement. According to the director, it was necessary to make the movie believable.

Mani Ratnam opened about the choice of Jewelry for the actors. Talking about his need to get everything correct, he wished to even get everything original including the Jewelry and costumes of the period. Actors wore real Gold in the movie. Talking to one of the leading news daily, he opened up.
“We gave special emphasis to the costume to make them believable and lend the period-specific authenticity and still evoke that sense of royalty. We were very lucky to have Kishandas (the jewellery designer) on board with us and we worked with actual gold jewellery.”

Film maker choses to go with original Gold Jewelry
Real traditional jewelry such as nose pins, vankis, arm bands, vaddanams, hair pieces, and neck pieces with traditional motifs were created. Also, the ornaments that were temples inspired included Long and Medium Necklaces, Maang tikas, Maatha pattis, Jhumkas, rings and bangles made in gold, predominantly set in burmese rubies, some emeralds and uncut diamonds. The jewelry matched with costume and Hair styling.
