Not many know that famous Japanese Designer Issey Miyake Khadi Fascination drove him to adopt it in his lifestyle.

As far as the history of Indian garment industry goes, it started as a revolution with Mahatma Gandhi’s Khadhi. The symbol of Charkha(spinning wheel ) stands as a symbol of pride and identity for all Indians. There is a great fascination of the craft among both Indians and Foreigners alike. However there are some names who played an active role in making both Khadi and Make in India popular. Issey Miyake was one of the names who actually could be termed as Khadi’s First Global Ambassador. Designer passed away yesterday but left trails of his legacy for generations to remember in the near future. Issey Miyake’s Khadi Fascination can be judged from the fact that he inspired even the FDCI chief Sunil Sethi and designers Thakore and Samant, He inspired them to work on Khadi and Make in India Concept.

Issey Miyake’s Khadi Fascination was inspired by Simplicity and Purity

Japanese Designer Issey Miyake passed away on August 5th and left a legacy. I myself am one of his fans and not to mention Issey Miyake POUR HOMME is always there in my Cologne collections. Needless to say the woody fragrance of the cologne keeps you fresh for hours long. His love for Khadi is made out from the fact that he had backroom production hubs in and around the city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat.

FDCI Chief Mr Sunil Sethi recalled visiting one of the designers vendors in the city. He was surprised to find local craftsmen making apparel for the designer. If there was one person who could be the global ambassador, it was one and only Issey Miyake. Issey Miyake’s Khadi Fascination was so much that he held an exhibition at the Tribeca store in New York, titled, “Khadi: Indian Craftsmanship.” But the drive for KHADI elevated after he met Textile revivalist Martand Singh and Asha Sarabhai. They were instrumental in creating ASHA.
